You are reading this because you are enrolled in Mr. Dollison’s AP US Government & Politics class for 2021-2022 school year. AP Government & Politics will examine the Constitutional foundations to the institutions and processes of the Federal Government. It is not a history course, though historical knowledge of the Constitutional Convention, the emergence of political parties, sectionalism, the New Deal, and Civil Right movements will help contextualize topics covered in US Government.
To prepare for the class, you have only three (3) summer assignments:
1. Set up your Remind account before June 15.
2. Start following the news. Not the partisan leaning FOX or MSNBC! I recommend the PBS NewsHour or Gabe Fleischer’s Wake Up to Politics daily newsletter. It will be important that you keep up with political news (as aggravating as it is) in order to understand examples and case studies used in class.
3. Read the Constitution of the United States. This is the foundational document at the core of our study of government. Your ability to reference Articles, clauses and amendments is the key to a 4 on the exam. I suggest to use the online annotated online version found at: https://constitutioncenter.org/interactive-constitution/the-constitution
a) Know the branches or topic for Articles I through VI (example Article I outlines the structure, functions,
and powers of the legislative branch)
b) Know the importance of the following clauses in the Constitution:
i) Advise & Consent (Article II, sec.2, cl.2)
ii) Clause Commerce Clause (Art. I, sec.8, cl.3)
iii) Elastic Clause, Necessary & Proper (Art.I, sec.8, cl.3)
iv) Full Faith & Credit Clause (Art. IV, sec.1)
v) General Welfare Clause (Art. I, sec.1)
vi) Impeachment Clauses (Art. I, sec.2, cl.5 / Art. I, sec.3, cl.4)
vii) Privileges & Immunities Clause (Art. IV, sec.2, cl.1)
viii) Supremacy Clause (Art. VI, cl.2)
ix) Taxing & Spending Clause (Art. I, sec.8, cl.1)
c) Know all 27 Amendments
I will send an occasional message through Remind over the summer. I look forward to seeing your real-life faces in Room 9 this August.
